How to register a trademark in Uzbekistan: a step-by-step guide
Detailed walkthrough of the trademark registration process in Uzbekistan — from preliminary search to certificate issuance. Timelines, documents, costs.
Registering a trademark in Uzbekistan is an important step in protecting your brand. In this article we walk through the entire process from start to finish.
Why register a trademark?
A trademark is your legal protection against unfair competitors. Without registration you can’t stop others from using a similar name or logo — even if you’ve been in the market for years.
A registered trademark gives you exclusive rights to use it across Uzbekistan for 10 years, renewable indefinitely.
Registration stages
1. Preliminary search
Before filing, run a search against the registered-trademarks database. This surfaces potential conflicts and saves you time and money. Use our free search service.
2. Preparing the application
The application is filed with the Intellectual Property Agency under the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Required documents:
- Application form
- Trademark image (for graphic marks)
- List of goods and services per NICE classes
- Proof of payment of the state fee
- Power of attorney (if filed through a representative)
3. Formal examination
The Agency checks document correctness and completeness of the submitted materials. Timeline: up to 1 month.
4. Substantive examination
This stage assesses the mark’s registrability: whether it’s descriptive, generic, or misleading. The Agency also checks similarity with previously registered marks. Timeline: up to 12 months.
5. Certificate issuance
With a positive decision, the trademark is entered into the State Register and the registration certificate is issued.
Timeline and cost
Total registration time is 12 to 18 months. The state fee depends on the number of NICE classes and runs 2 to 5 base reference units per class.
